Special Milk Program
The Special Milk Program provides milk to children in schools and child care institutions that do not participate in other Federal child nutrition meal service programs. In other words, only schools not participating in the school lunch or breakfast programs and split session kindergarten classes that do not have access to school meals are eligible to participate in the Special Milk Program. Milk may be served any time during the regular school day.
Begun in 1955, the program is administered at the Federal level by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through its Food and Nutrition Service. Federal reimbursement is available on each one-half pint of milk served to children.
